Volcanoes National Park, situated in Rwanda as part of the broader Virunga Conservation Area, shared with Uganda and Congo DRC, boasts a stunning landscape defined by nine volcanoes, including Karisimbi, Visoke, Sabinyo, and Muhavura. Ranging from 2400 m to over 4000 m, the park’s peaks offer diverse ecosystems. Since 2003, visitors can explore the habitat of endangered golden monkeys. Notable sites include Mount Visoke, housing the tombs of primatologist Dian Fossey and the gorilla cemetery. The park is renowned for its mountain gorilla tracking, allowing encounters with one of the six habituated families. This unforgettable experience can be initiated from either Kampala or Kigali.

Itinerary

Day 1 :
Kigali

Upon arrival at Kigali airport, your guide will promptly transfer you to your chosen accommodation for an overnight stay. Depending on your arrival time, an optional afternoon or evening city tour may be arranged for exploration. Your lodging options include Kigali Serena Hotel for a premium experience, Hotel Mille Collin for comfort, or Flame Tree Village Hotel for an economical stay, all under the Bed & Breakfast arrangement.

After an early breakfast, embark on the thrilling adventure of mountain gorilla trekking in the lush rainforest of Volcanoes National Park. Following a briefing from ORTPN rangers (Rwanda Park Authority), you commence your trek from the designated starting point, determined by the assigned gorilla family. Permit distribution is managed by the park authority upon arrival. Armed with a packed lunch, a light rain jacket, and sturdy trekking boots, you explore the captivating natural surroundings. In the afternoon, consider a community walk at the Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village eco-tourist site. Conclude the day with dinner and an overnight stay at Davinci Lodge (E) or Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (C) in one of the 5 Volcanoes Deluxe Rooms (P) under the Full Board arrangement.

Following breakfast, engage in an optional trekking activity (refer to available options and prices), accompanied by a packed lunch.
In the afternoon, return to Kigali, with the option for a transfer to Kigali International Airport.

Additional activities on extra days include visiting the Old Karisoke Dian Fossey Centre and the gorilla cemetery on Mount Visoke—a captivating 7-8 hour trek through the forest. Alternatively, embark on a golden monkey trek to witness these endangered primates, with the option to extend your stay at the same lodge for an extra night.
